The Outside Buyer is required to visit facilities of current and potential suppliers within their regions such as demolition contractors, scrap dealers, autowreckers,and construction projects. Responsible for generating purchases of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.The Outside Buyer continually investigates new sources of scrap to develop relationships leading to procurement of all grades of metals. The Outside Buyer represents themselves as the point person for the organization and communicates with the General Manager and facility managers so that purchases are in line with production requirements and the overall buy plan for the region. The Outside Buyer is required to focus on developing and building customer/supplier relationships and negotiating prices and contracts that build, grow, and retain the supplier base. Must be knowledgeable of costs associated with the purchase of ferrous and nonferrous materials as well as the current market and sales to provide optimum pricing strategies. This position requires knowledge and understanding of costs associated with freight in; handling, processing of ferrous & nonferrous materials providing optimum pricing to the supplier while achieving desired metal margins. The incumbent inspects storage piles for material quality of delivered materials. Must be in constant contact with the Commercial Operational Manager and utilize the capabilities within the Commercial Support Group to assist with bid preparation and job costing. The Outside Buyer is expected to spend sixty percent of the work week visiting new suppliers and maintaining existing relationships and the remaining forty percent in marketing and administrative duties as directed by the Commercial Manager. The Outside Buyer provides weekly action reporting.
- Bachelor's degree in Marketing or Business is preferred
- 5+ years prior industry sales experience and/or 5-10 years prior experience as a metal buyer in the scrap industry
- A valid driver's license
- Knowledge of testing and identifying metal alloys
- Superior customer service skills
- Windows XP, which includes Outlook
- Tact and ability to communicate with people at all levels, both orally and in writing
- Excellent mathematical and problem solving skills
- Strong negotiation skills
- Attention to detail and accuracy
