Position Description

Responsible for state-level planning, implementation and evaluation of income sources. Ensure that net income goals are met while maintaining the Society s New England standards. Works collaboratively with field and Division development staff. Ensure that expenses are kept at acceptable levels. Focus on donor retention and upgrading is essential. Provides leadership of state operations of the American Cancer Society in collaboration with the State Vice President of Health Initiatives. Works collaboratively with State Vice President for Health Initiatives, State Government Relations and Advocacy Director. Provides leadership to the State Coordination Team to assure success of integrated planning initiatives. Works with centralized Development staff and with Area Directors where pertinent to develop annual state income development action plan and budget. The budget focuses on raising net dollars to fund our mission in New England and budget, assuming a strategic link between State and Division Development plans. Achieve a return on investment, with the ratio of fundraising to management costs not to exceed 25%. Hires, trains and supervises field Development staff (in Connecticut and Massachusetts, this staff includes Area Directors for Development as well as Community Executives for Development and Program Managers). Develops an environment in which volunteer management is clearly the acceptable mode of operations. Ensures the capture of comprehensive and accurate donor and volunteer records. This will allow for appropriate acknowledgements and receipting, cultivation and future follow-up. Provides donors with opportunities to become more involved in our mission (i.e., as volunteers and/or advocates), which will increase their commitment, and this involvement will yield continued financial investment in our important work. Utilizes CRM as a critical business process to achieve the volunteer/staff partnership objective, and focuses on the lifetime value of our donors as a key metric. Follows up with top prospects identified by Director of Donor Relations (i.e., top Notes to Neighbors, Strides, Relay volunteers and donors). Establishes and implements an action plan that matches the Society s New England income development products (i.e., special events) with appropriate markets, and measures performance based on market penetration as well as net income raised. Identifies opportunities to engage diverse populations and communities in income development initiatives. Establishes and maintains relationships with United Way and Community Health Charities to ensure that the Society receives appropriate market share of campaign and implements a comprehensive worksite strategy. Coordination will include Division as well as NHO staff. Recruits appropriate influential volunteers for federation Boards. Actively supports workplace giving initiatives. Works collaboratively with Distinguished Giving field and centralized staff on securing sponsorships. Works closely with State Vice President of Health Initiatives and State Director of Government Relations and Advocacy to ensure that State Relay for Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer mission goals are met. Works closely with Major Gifts and Planned Giving staff to identify and refer prospects on an ongoing basis, including through direct solicitation of prospects, where appropriate. Network with high-level worksites, foundation and major gift prospects by partnering with Distinguished Giving Directors/volunteers using donor moves manager. Maintains working knowledge of Division s Direct Marketing (acquisition and renewal mail, Notes to Neighbors, telemarketing) to be able to represent the Society in response to related public inquiries. Works with Division Marketing and Communications to ensure that tribute gifts (i.e., memorials) are adequately promoted (i.e., funeral homes). Works with Division Relay For Life Business Unit and VP to ensure meeting income and community mobilization goals; works collaboratively with State Health Initiatives and Advocacy colleagues to maximize Relay as a portal concept, i.e., provide survivors recruited through Relay with other volunteer opportunities. Redirect clubs and organization to Relay where possible. Works with Division support to achieve Daffodil Days net goal. Works to ensure that state Making Strides Against Breast Cancer income and mission goals are met. Works collaboratively with State Health Initiatives and Advocacy colleagues to identify potential teams as well as to ensure breast cancer goals are met (i.e., provide Strides walkers and donors opportunities to volunteer for Tell A Friend, Reach to Recovery, advocacy). Supports Distinguished Events, Endurance Events, Coaches vs. Cancer and CEOs vs. Cancer as needed. Creates and champions a learning environment. In Massachusetts, supervises Discovery Shop Manager to ensure goals of our one shop is met. Works with Marketing and Communications on statewide cause-related marketing and sponsorship/underwriting opportunities. Maximizes income by working with Marketing and Communications on promoting matching gift opportunities. Collaborates with Division Development and Marketing/Communications on future innovation . Ensures that Division cash management and branding standards are met. Collaborates with Enterprise Systems and CRM as well as Director of Donor Relations to ensure that donors are being appropriately acknowledged and cultivated. Personally recruits assigned number of team captains for Relay For Life, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer or selected endurance events each year, and attain fundraising goal in accordance with Fight Back Team Challenge guidelines. Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Position Requirements

Bachelor s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of three years fundraising experience; preferably in management with extensive knowledge of the development model. Prior experience in leading a team and managing staff is critical. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with community, corporate/foundation leaders, donors and volunteers. Experience in planning, analytical skills, and the ability to translate data are desired. Ability to successfully operate in a team matrix structure is a must. Must be able to see the big picture and how income development relates to mission. Travel throughout state and Division meetings required. Commitment to the mission, values, and goals of the American Cancer Society s New England Division. Ability to work cooperatively and in a team environment with peers and superiors.
