Position Summary Reporting to the Provost, the Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity will serve as the University's principal institutional diversity officer. In this role, the incumbent will represent Brown's commitment to diversity to both internal and external constituencies with a special emphasis on the academic workforce. This involves a range of activities to further strengthen the recruitment of faculty and students from under-represented groups, provide campus leadership on a range of diversity matters, and oversee the reporting of diversity-related compliance data. The incumbent will also serve as the point-person for complaints about faculty misconduct. In these duties, the Associate Provost will work in close coordination with other University offices, including the Dean of Faculty, the Dean of Biology and Medicine, Campus Life, Human Resources, and the General Counsel, as well as serve on University committees where expertise on diversity issues is needed.
More specifically, the Associate Provost will:
- Advise the Provost and President on issues related to campus diversity.
- Convene and coordinate activities of individual academic units' diversity officers.
- Coordinate initiatives and efforts with the Director of Staff Diversity (the designated EEO/AA compliance officer for the University) and the Director of Student and Employee Accessibility Services.
- Oversee diversity-related reporting.
- Work with the Director of Staff Diversity to prepare required annual Affirmative Action Plans for equitable hiring of women, minorities, veterans, and the disabled.
- Serve as the University's Title IX officer
- Work with the Dean of Faculty and the Dean of Biology and Medicine to ensure that faculty recruiting (including visiting faculty and postdoctoral fellows) is carried out with appropriate attention to the University's diversity goals. This includes advising departments and search committee chairs, reviewing recruiting plans, and monitoring demographics of candidates at each stage of a search.
- Coordinate diversity-related mentoring and retention activities.
- Staff or serve as a member of relevant university committees and represent the University at outside meetings on diversity issues.
- Work with the Office of Sponsored Projects, Corporate and Foundation Relations, and other offices as appropriate to identify, and submit applications for, government and philanthropic funding for diversity-related initiatives.
- Manage complaints of sexual harassment and discrimination involving faculty members.

Experience with writing grant proposals and with handling complaints about faculty would be additional assets for this position.
